
Stop the Chipping: Why We Preheat Our Glass
Anyone who’s spent time on a cutting floor knows the frustration of those tiny micro-cracks. You think you’ve got a clean cut, but then you hit the edge of the sheet and—snap—you’ve got a corner breakout. It’s a waste of material and a headache for everyone. To fix this, we start hitting the glass with infrared (IR) heat before the cutting head even touches it. It sounds simple, but it changes everything. How it actually works Glass doesn’t really like to move heat around. When it’s cold, it’s tense. That internal stress is exactly what makes the glass shatter unpredictably, leaving you with those jagged, ugly chips. By warming up the surface with IR radiation, we basically relax the material. It makes the glass a bit more “forgiving” at a molecular level. Instead of the crack jumping all over the place, it follows a straight, clean line. You get a smoother break and way less scrap in the bin. Setting up the gear We usually go with short-wave IR lamps. Why? Because they punch through the surface fast. You don’t need a massive, sprawling setup to get the glass up to temperature; it happens quickly, right where you need it. But you have to be careful. If you crank the power too high or put the lamps too close, you’ll actually create new stresses from the heat. The trick is a slow ramp-up. We sync the lamp intensity with the speed of the line via the PLC. That way, every inch of the sheet gets the same amount of heat, regardless of how fast the belt is moving. The real-world trade-offs Now, this isn’t a magic wand. There are a couple of things to watch out for on the shop floor. First, these lamps put out a lot of heat. If you’re running a big array, your ventilation has to be on point. Otherwise, your operators are going to be sweating through their shirts, and nobody wants that. Also, keep the quartz tubes clean. Dust loves to settle on those lamps, and when it does, your heat output drops. Even worse, you get hot spots that can burn out a lamp way sooner than it should. A quick wipe-down saves you a lot of money in the long run.
