Dealing with the Damp
An IP55 rating basically means the housing can handle dust and low-pressure water sprays. But in a sauna or a shower, steam is like a ghost—it finds every single tiny gap. We seal the terminals tight to stop “tracking.” That’s when moisture creates a little bridge for electricity to travel across an insulator, which usually ends in a short circuit. If that seal lets go, the whole unit becomes a liability. Not a risk you want to take.
The Deal with Explosion-Proof Quartz
Here is the scary part: a regular quartz tube can shatter the second a cold drop of water hits it while it’s running at 600°C. It’s called thermal shock, and it happens in a blink. We use treated, explosion-proof quartz because it can handle those wild temperature swings without cracking. The science is pretty straightforward—the material just spreads the heat stress more evenly. Think about it. If a tube bursts in a shower, you’ve got shards of hot glass and live wires sitting on a wet floor. Using the explosion-proof grade is the only way to make sure that doesn’t happen.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
These lamps get people warm fast because they pack a lot of heat into a small space. But there’s a trade-off. The higher the wattage, the faster the tube hits those critical temperatures. Make sure your mounting brackets are actually rated for that kind of heat, otherwise, they’ll start to warp and sag over time. And one last tip: check your circuit breakers. These units pull a lot of power the moment they kick on. If your wiring is too thin, you’re going to be tripping the breaker every single time you want some heat. Use the right gauge wire and you’ll be golden.
