Cutting cold glass is basically a gamble. You score it, you break it, and you just hope you don’t end up with those annoying jagged edges or a corner that snaps off right where it shouldn’t. It’s frustrating, and it wastes material. The trick to stopping this is simple: don’t cut it cold. We use infrared preheating to prep the glass before the blade ever touches it.
The “Why” Behind the Heat
Glass is stubborn and brittle. When you hit it with a cold blade, the internal tension is high, and the crack can jump or branch out in directions you didn’t intend. That’s where those chips come from. By running shortwave infrared lamps over the cutting line, we soften things up. It’s not about melting the glass, but just easing those molecular bonds. This lets the crack glide cleanly along the score line. No jumping, no branching, just a smooth edge.
Getting the Heat Right
You can’t just throw any heater at this. You need a lot of heat, and you need it now. That’s why we stick with quartz halogen tubes. They hit their target temperature in seconds. If your line is moving fast, you’ll need more wattage per centimeter to make sure the glass is actually warm by the time it hits the head. But here’s the catch: don’t just crank the power to the max. If the line is scorching hot but the rest of the sheet is freezing, you’re just creating new stress points. It’s a balancing act between your conveyor speed and the lamp’s wattage. You’re looking for a consistent, steady warmth.
Keeping Things Running
Industrial shops are messy. Dust and oil splashes love to land on quartz tubes, and that’s a problem. Those spots create “hot spots” that burn out your lamps way faster than they should. Keep them clean. It’s a simple chore, but it keeps the heat even across the whole width of the glass. And a quick tip when you’re swapping tubes: make sure the connectors are tight. A loose fit leads to electrical arcing, and that’s the fastest way to fry your socket. Just click them in tight, and you’re good to go.
