
Keeping Things Warm (and Safe) in the Steam
Let’s be honest: showers and steam rooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got humidity everywhere, water spraying every which way, and a whole lot of heat. In those conditions, normal heating elements just give up. They short out, or worse, the tubes actually shatter. That’s why we don’t mess around. We use IP65-rated housings and explosion-proof quartz glass to stop the chaos before it starts. The “Cold Drop” Problem Here is the thing about glass: it hates sudden changes. Imagine a glowing hot heating element. Now imagine a single, cold drop of water hitting it. With regular glass, that temperature shock creates a massive amount of internal stress. Crack. It’s over. We use quartz glass because it handles that stress without breaking a sweat. It can go from freezing to scorching and back again without fracturing. This keeps the heating filament tucked away and safe from the dampness around it. Stopping the Leaks Then there’s the electrical side. An IP65 rating is basically a fancy way of saying the unit is dust-tight and can handle being blasted by water jets. We focus heavily on sealing the wire entries and connector ports. Why? Because if moisture sneaks in and hits a live terminal, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. By locking down the current path, we keep the power where it belongs. The Balancing Act It’s not all easy, though. High-wattage infrared lamps put out an incredible amount of heat. Even though the quartz glass won’t shatter, that heat still gets trapped inside the IP65 housing. You can’t just seal a box 100% airtight—the air inside would expand and push back. So, we design these with specific venting and heat-sink footprints. It stops the housing from warping or melting the very seals that keep the water out. A Quick Tip for Setup When you’re wiring these in, double-check your breakers. Infrared filaments have a bit of a surge when they first kick on, so make sure your system can handle it. These are designed to be drop-in replacements for standard heaters, but please, be obsessive about the seal on the junction box. If that seal leaks, you’re relying entirely on the quartz glass as your last line of defense. And while that glass is tough, it’s always better to have two layers of safety than one.
